Important Dates and Deadlines

Keep in mind the following dates and deadlines for the Fall 2017 semester!

August 23 First day of fall classes

August 25 myNOVA portal opens for May graduation applications

August 31 Last day of drop-add

September 15 Last day to apply in the myNOVA portal for December graduation

Late September Thesis and Field Exam Workshop, 7:30, SAC 300

Early October  Ph.D. Forum, 7:30, SAC 300

October 9        Recommended day by which students wishing to graduate in the spring approach faculty members to serve as director and second reader of the thesis or field exam

October 7    Fall Break Begins

October 16   Classes Resume

November 08 Last day for Authorized Withdrawal without academic penalty

November 10 Last day for “Application for Independent Study” form for spring independent studies to be submitted to the graduate committee.

November 13 Recommended day by which students planning to write a spring thesis or field exam submit the first draft of the proposal to the director for review.

November 13   Last day for students to apply to serve as a faculty member’s teaching intern for the spring semester

November 13 Recommended day by which students writing a fall thesis submit the first draft to their thesis director for review

Mid-November Teaching Roundtable, 7:30, SAC 300

November 27   Recommended day by which students writing a fall thesis submit their final draft to their director and second reader.

December  02 Recommended day by which students taking a fall field exam to submit the “comprehensive statement” portion to the first and second reader.

December 08   Last day for students to submit spring thesis or field examination proposal to Brooke Erdman, who will forward it to the graduate committee.

December 08   Recommended day by which students taking a fall field exam complete the oral component (see reminders above for information about last day students are officially permitted to take the field exam).

December 08 Last day for students writing a fall thesis to submit one copy in final form to the Graduate Studies Office (students must then also post the thesis online).

December 11  Last day of fall classes
