2019 ETS GRE® Summer Institute: Paid Summer Associate Positions Available The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) group in the Assessment Development Division of Educational Testing Service (ETS) expects to hire approximately five summer associates for the summer of 2019. POSITION OVERVIEW: GRE summer associates will produce materials for use on large-scale, high-stakes standardized tests to assess readiness for graduate-level work. Specifically, they will help develop assessment materials for the Verbal Reasoning measure, which assesses complex verbal reasoning skills. The test development work is intellectually challenging and rewarding. The work may include: • writing items that test reading comprehension and analytical reasoning; and • identifying academic texts which are suitable for testing critical reading and analytical skills. The Department of Philosophy at Haverford College is delighted to invite you to the 2019 Altherr lecture, which will be given by Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, University Professor in English and Comparative Literature, Columbia University. Professor Spivak’s lecture, titled “Complicity,” will take place on Saturday 23 February, 4:00 pm-5:45 pm in Stokes Auditorium. The lecture will be followed by a public reception in Stokes Lobby from 5:45pm pm-6:45 pm. Gayatri Spivak is a leading figure in the humanities, and her work is foundational in postcolonial studies. Her writings include "Can the Subaltern Speak?", A Critique of Postcolonial Reason,Outside in the Teaching Machine, The Post-Colonial Critic, In Other Worlds: Essays in Cultural Politics , and an influential translation of, and introduction to, Derrida's Of Grammatology . In 2012 she was awarded the Kyoto Prize in Arts and Philosophy.

For any of you interested in science writing, including writing science fiction, check out the Launch Pad Astronomy Workshop . Launch Pad “is an education/public outreach effort” whose “primary goal is to teach writers, editors, and creative professionals about modern science, specifically astronomy, and in turn reach their large and diverse audiences.” The workshop, which takes place July 22-28, 2019 , at the University of Wyoming in Laramie , is free, and Launch Pad can sometimes offer travel assistance. The lecturers include Christian Ready, who was an undergraduate at Villanova and whose mother, Cecilia Ready, teaches in our department as an adjunct faculty member.
